Bun in the Oven: My Comical Journey through the First Trimester

Updated: May 13, 2023

Ah, the first trimester of pregnancy. A time of excitement, fear, and... nausea. As someone who recently went through this stage, I can say with confidence that it's no walk in the park.

First of all, let's talk about the nausea. I don't know who came up with the term "morning sickness," because, for me, it was more like "all-day-and-night sickness." I couldn't even look at certain foods without feeling like I was going to toss my cookies. And don't even get me started on the smells. One time, I nearly gagged at the scent of my partner's deodorant. It was a dark time.

But the first trimester also had its moments of humor. Like the time I cried at a puppy commercial or when I asked my partner if he could feel the baby kicking yet (spoiler alert: it was way too early for that). And let's not forget the joys of fatigue, where I would find myself dozing off during meetings or falling asleep mid-conversation.

In all seriousness, the first trimester can be a rollercoaster of emotions and physical changes. It's important to take care of yourself and listen to your body, even if that means taking a nap in the middle of the day or indulging in some weird food cravings (hello, pickles and ice cream).

And while it may not always be easy, try to find the humor in the situation. Laugh at yourself when you cry over spilled milk or when you have to excuse yourself from a meeting to hurl in the bathroom. Remember that you're not alone in this journey and that there are plenty of other moms-to-be out there experiencing the same things.

So, to all my fellow first-trimester warriors out there, hang in there. It may not be a walk in the park, but it's definitely a ride worth taking.
